Jamaican Blue Mountain Coffee Grades Explained — What You're Actually Buying
Not all Jamaican Blue Mountain Coffee is the same. The Jamaica Agricultural Commodities Regulatory Authority (JACRA) uses a rigorous grading system that distinguishes between lots based on bean size, defect counts, and cup quality. If you're spending premium prices on a specialty coffee of this caliber, you should know exactly which tier you're buying — and why it matters.
The Official JACRA Grading System
JACRA classifies certified Jamaican Blue Mountain Coffee into four primary grades:
Blue Mountain No. 1
The highest standard grade. These are the largest beans, screened to size 17/18 (approximately 6.75–7.14mm diameter), with the most stringent defect tolerance — a maximum of 2% defective beans per lot. No. 1 is the grade that the most discerning specialty coffee buyers and direct farm relationships produce. It is the gold standard for single-origin Jamaican Blue Mountain Coffee purchases.
Blue Mountain No. 2
Slightly smaller beans, screened to size 15/16, with a marginally higher defect tolerance. The flavor difference between No. 1 and No. 2 is subtle for most tasters, but the size consistency and lower defect rate of No. 1 matters in roasting — larger, more uniform beans roast more evenly, which translates directly into cup consistency.
Blue Mountain No. 3
The smallest standard grade, with the highest permitted defect tolerance. While still JACRA certified Jamaican Blue Mountain Coffee, this grade is less desirable for buyers prioritizing the premium expression of what this specialty coffee can deliver.
Peaberry
A separate classification entirely. Peaberry beans occur when a coffee cherry develops a single rounded bean rather than the standard two flat-sided beans. The lone bean absorbs all the nutrients meant for two, which produces a more intensely concentrated flavor. Peaberry beans must be hand-sorted to separate them from standard beans — adding labor and cost. True Jamaican Blue Mountain Peaberry is among the rarest and most expensive expressions of certified JBM available anywhere.
Why Grade Matters for Roasting
Bean size consistency is not aesthetic — it's functional. Uniformly sized beans roast more evenly, meaning the roast profile can be dialed in with greater precision, and each bean in the batch reaches its optimal development at the same time. Mixed-size lots produce roasting inconsistency: smaller beans over-roast before larger beans are fully developed. The result is a cup that's less clean, less consistent, and ultimately less representative of what Jamaican Blue Mountain Coffee can be at its best.
